A kundalini awakening is one of the most rewarding experiences a human being can have and at the same time it is very challenging as well. During a kundalini awakening a strong energy is ignited within us that enables us to reach our highest potential – but only if we are able to leave behind all our petty human weaknesses and frailties.
Many people wrongly believe that kundalini is an energy that will simply be added to our present personality, so that we can use it to work miracles and gain supernatural powers. But it does not work that way.
The pot of water analogy
Imagine we are a pot of water and the kundalini is the energy from a stove that brings the water to the boil. What happens to the water? It changes completely and transforms into steam. This is essentially what happens to people under the powerful influence of kundalini energy. If all goes well we will emerge as a thoroughly changed and more enlightened person at the end of this deep transformation. But it is more likely that we will have to work for many years to change ourselves and our lives over and over again until we finally adapt to the higher energy that is flowing through our system.
And just when we think we have finally made all the necessary changes, a fresh influx of kundalini energy may force us once again to examine our approach to other people and to the world in general.
Through this process kundalini ‘forces’ us to become more loving by making our previous – more selfish – life exceedingly painful. Under the influence of this powerful energy we will be confronted with all our inner demons that were well hidden in our unconscious mind. It is as if someone switches on a bright lamp in a previously dimly lit room and suddenly we become aware of all the dirt that has been festering away in the recesses of our psyche.
With awakened kundalini these negativities cannot be denied any more but need to be worked through in a thorough and honest way. Doing this may cause a grief, guilt-feelings and confusion. It is therefore not surprising that some people want to withdraw from the world or experience a personality crisis during this phase.
Many people try to repress this unsettling material and will experience many painful physical symptoms as a result. Yet others may succumb to the temptation of selfishly misusing their newly awakened powers – with dire consequences.
But if the process of kundalini awakening is fully understood and embraced it is extremely rewarding.
The rewards of a kundalini awakening
Once we have come to terms with our own potential darkness, we will become freer and stronger than ever before. A deep compassion with our own human failings will enable us to be compassionate with others and show them the way to a more liberated life. In the end this process will lead to enlightenment or union with God.
